Department of theatre arts

The Department of Theatre Arts offers a diversified undergraduate program in theatre, with concentrations in both performance and production, leading to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees. The academic program is structured with a comprehensive curriculum in theatre studies, supported by an extensive production program that is varied and challenging. The Department also offers a minor in Theatre Arts. In addition, many Theatre students double major or minor in other disciplines within the university and the Theatre program is particularly well-suited for this individualized type of study, so there are many options available.Major Course RequirementsThe Department of Theatre Arts offers students newly revised curriculum designed to strengthen the educational offerings for students majoring in Theatre Arts. These curriculum revisions focused on five key areas to support the student's educational needs, align with the department's mission, and insure compliance with NAST accreditation standards:    Formalize course sequencing and strengthen prerequisites.    Improve foundational training in script analysis.    Bolster production classes in the Theatre Arts core.    Restructure Practicum requirements to better support student education and the production program.    Enhance exposure to global traditions in theatre.Under the new curriculum, students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Theatre Arts must complete a total of 39 semester hours of theatre study in addition to the General Education requirements. Of these courses, 15 semester hours are at the Junior or Senior level plus Practicum that can be advanced courses. In addition to University and College requirements, Theatre Arts majors must earn a C or better in every required course for the major and maintain a 2.5 grade point average in all theatre courses. Students may not enroll in a theatre arts course for which a required course is a prerequisite unless they have earned a C or better in the required course. PracticumAll Theatre Arts Majors and Minors are required to earn 3 credit hours of Practicum (THE 107, 108, 207, 208, 307, 308, 407, 408). Practicum allows students the opportunity for training on equipment and systems relative to the three studios; scenery, costumes, and lighting; that support theatre production and offer students opportunities for leadership roles in the production process.Practicum is offered in multiple sections each semester as a .5 semester hour course. All students are expected to enroll in Practicum each semester they are in residence until they have completed this requirement. For the .5 credit hour, students will be assigned to one (1) production a semester and rotate through the various crews to enhance their practical theatre experiences or be assigned to one (1) of the production studios for the full semester. Students assigned to the production studios work only the hours of their selected section. Students assigned to a crew will work hours as arranged.Students performing a lead role in a main stage production may petition the faculty to have that role count as their practicum assignment up to a total of one (1) credit hour. Petition forms are available in the Theatre Arts office. Approval of the petition is the exception
