In 1996, a five-million dollar endowment named the college the Henry Pindell Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts. Henry Pindell Slane, a life-long Peoria, and chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Peoria Journal Star, generously established the endowed gift. As part of the endowed funds, a Slane Scholar program was established to name and bring professions to the college as the Visiting Slane Scholar in Residence. The scholars teach master classes and conduct projects that are tailored to the needs of the college and the visiting department. A Slane Scholar is selected every other year on a rotating basis with each of the five departments within the Slane College.
